Doug started his new job as a Counterintelligence officer at Fort Richardson, near Anchorage, Alaska. His role involved investigating acts of espionage and terrorism, so one of his first tasks was to familiarize himself with the Alaskan terrain by studying maps. Coming from Ohio, Doug found Alaska's rugged and vast landscape a challenge to comprehend.

With its sprawling 700,000 square miles, Alaska is twice the size of Texas. To get a better grasp, Doug spread several maps across a large table, looking over features like mountains, rivers, lakes, cities, and old mining towns, all typical on such maps. However, one particular detail caught his eye—an area the size of his thumb was blanked out on a map of Denali National Park. Intrigued, he used a magnifying glass and discovered a note stating that this area, located about 60 miles west of Mount McKinley, was "not surveyed to date."
