Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia) sing a varied trill that is always beautiful to hear.

LISTEN TO THE BEGINNING OF THEIR SONG, WHICH ALMOST ALWAYS BEGINS WITH 3 SHORT, SHARP NOTES AND THEN FOLLOWED BY A VARIED TRILL.

A helpful mnemonic to remember if you think you hear one is “Madgemadgemadge, putonyourteakettleettleettle.”

But don't rely solely on this mnemonic, because songs are incredibly different and unique, depending on the bird and location. In fact, individual Song Sparrows have been observed singing up to TWENTY different tunes, with as many as 1,000 slight variations!

Because their sounds and calls are so clear, they are relatively easy for people to identify.

The best places to find them singing their mating calls are on exposed branches, about eye level, near a permanent water source.

This recording was made in my backyard in Ohio! The Song Sparrow was singing on a small tree next to a marsh.
