"What I'll Be" was written at a songwriting retreat in New Mexico. I was noodling around on my guitar and someone walked by and said it sounded pretty I was going to write a song with it, right?

I had a couple of lines in my notebook from the day before when I was sitting next to Carson Creek, my hand in the water, amazed at how cold it was from the snow runoff up in the mountains.

WHAT I'LL BE LYRICS

I’ve landed here and thought I’d be alone,
But others have found this place to call home.
Covering the mountain side
With a solid sheet of silent white.

VERSE
A deer tracked through and there’s been a thaw,
But I’m still here, I keep hanging on.
There’s a rumor going ‘round about spring
When we’ll head down the mountain: the rest’s a mystery.

CHORUS
So I wait – wait for what I’ll be.
I believe there’s a plan for me in the big scheme of things.
So I wait – wait for what I’ll be –
Moving on to see – what I’ll be.

VERSE
As I ride the creek I feel the power.
We’re a force downing trees and watering flowers.
Early on they call me Carson Creek,
Then Padre where the Gulf and Rio meet.

CHORUS
So I wait – wait for what I’ll be.
I believe there’s a plan for me in the big scheme of things.
So I wait – wait for what I’ll be –
Pushing on to see – what I’ll be.

VERSE
Well, I’ve been here a while trying to figure it out,
Caught in the swirl of fish swimming ‘round.
A wind lifts me up one day,
And I start again as a single snowflake.

CHORUS
So I wait – wait for what I’ll be.
I believe there’s a plan for me in the big scheme of things.
So I wait – wait for what I’ll be –
Living on to see – what I’ll be.
