Sonny Landreth

Sonny Landreth is known as the ‘King of Slydeco’. He is an American Blues guitarist whose compositions and unique style of playing the slide guitar are deeply influenced by his Louisiana roots and regard for the music of early blues masters, especially Robert Johnson.

Mr. Landreth has played and recorded with Clifton Chenier, John Hiatt, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers and with Eric Clapton, among others. Wikipedia quotes no less an authority than Eric Clapton as declaring that “Landreth is one of the most advanced guitarists in the world and one of the most underappreciated”. He received the American Music Association’s Instrumentalist of the year award in 2005 and he also received the Blues Music Award in the ‘InstrumentalistGuitar’ category in 2016.

Beginning with Blues Attack (1981) and Way Down in Louisiana (1985) for Blues Unlimited, Landreth’s creative output has been straight and steady including the highly regarded South of I10 for Volcano Records in 1995, three really good albums for Sugar Hill, Levee Town (2000), The Road We’re On (2003) and Grant Street (2005), From the Reach that he put out under the Landfall label in 2008 and Bound by the Blues recorded in 2015 for Provogue.

Sonny Landreth is unique in that he is a prolific songwriter whose albums consist primarily of his own compositions and include very few covers. If you start at the beginning of his recording career and listen to his albums in chronological order you hear a man whose interior life sounds heartfelt and deeply reflective and whose musical skills have been honed to a bright gleam.

If asked to recommend just one of Sonny Landreth’s albums I would have to choose Elemental Journey that he recorded for Landfall in 2012. In this album his slide play is so mature, so knowing and introspective with touches of regret that you can hear clear as day and which is in perfect tandem with his lyrics. This is not music that occurs overnight or by mistake. This is music made by a man who has considered his life and the music that he makes and whose depth of craft makes it all appear effortless and easy. Sonny Landreth is the real thing.
