I thought I'd dig out this very well used and somewhat abused Sony Video8 machine. It dates from around 1988 and i do really like these machines as they're solidly built (and surprisingly heavy!) and don't have any surface mount capacitors that later machines tend to suffer problems with.

On previewing the uploaded video, I've just realised there's no exploded view of the deck when it's mentioned because I don't have one! I will see if i can source one for part 2 though.
