SOPWITH CAMEL WITH WELSH AND DEVON CONNECTION 1

GULL PERCH FLYER

My grandfather became a pilot during the 1914 to 1918 World War One.
He joined 66 Squadron in Northern Italy flying Sopwith Camels.
During the First World War, Italy was on the side of their British Allies and their fight was against the AustroHungarian Empire, bordering on Austria. In October 1917, the AustroHungarians managed to push the Italians back during the battle of Caporetto. With the danger signs obvious, both Britain and France sent reinforcements. Britain’s Royal Flying Corps sent three squadrons of Sopwith Camel fighters, plus one RE8 reconnaissance squadron, and these Camel squadrons fought gallantly over the plains and mountainous regions of northeast Italy, sharing the air battle with aircraft of the Italian Air Force. Update edit the Camels of 66 squadron were fighting against the AustroHungarian Empire and not attacking Italian balloons as stated in the film.
66 Squadron was formed at Bristol on 3rd June 1916 and was posted to France in March 1917. Returning to England, the unit served on Home Defence before it was reassigned to Italy in November 1917.

66 Squadron flew offensive missions against the Austrians from Northern Italy. They flew the Sopwith Camel.
