Special Characteristics of Smooth Muscle Contraction vs Skeletal Muscle Contraction:
The mechanism of control of smooth muscle contraction is different from skeletal muscle.
Sidepolar crossbridges allow more shortening of smooth muscles, as compared to skeletal muscles.
The duration of the myosin crossbridge cycle, especially the attached state is longer in smooth muscles.
Because of this, the onset of contraction, and relaxation is slower.
And smooth muscles can maintain high force at low energy consumption for a long time, a mechanism called latch state.
And finally, stressrelaxation of smooth muscles allows hollow organs, to maintain relatively constant pressure inside their lumens, despite significant changes in volume over sustained periods.
