Spectacular KClO3/sucrose Reactions!

Potassium chlorate and sucrose (table sugar) react spectacularly to produce an intense purple flame. The chlorate can have the effect of intensifying the colors metal ions produce when heated, so you may add other metal compounds to change the color. The ratio of potassium chlorate to sugar is 1g sugar/2.9g KClO3. The ratio of colorants does not particularly matter if they are not oxidizers. If they are, you may adjust your ratio accordingly using stoichiometry. Chlorides, such as SrCl2 and CuCl2 are not oxiders, however, compounds such as NaNO3 and BaSO4 are due to the extra oxygen they carry. Enjoy!
