In the long history of the Church no conversion has been more consequential and dramatic than that of St Paul. Some conversions are dramatic and some are boring. Some conversions are instantaneous, some are gradual. Augustine heard a boy in a garden repeating, “Take and Read”, and knew the time had come. Saint Francis of Assisi heard Christ say from the cross “Rebuild My Church” and responded with his life. Often conversion teaches us that when Jesus comes to us, He doesn’t come alone. He comes with His angels, saints, priests, and bishops or any intermediaries. He comes with Mary, the sacraments, doctrine, and devotions. He comes with the Church because he and the Church are one. After his conversion, St Paul went to Damascus. Acts of the Apostles Chapter 9 states that he was healed of his blindness and baptized by Ananias of Damascus. The conversion of St Paul the Apostle |Pauline conversion| Damascene conversion | Damascus event, made him to cease persecuting early Christians and to become a follower of Jesus. St Paul is often considered to be the most important person after Jesus in the history of Christianity. St Paul had an enormous influence on Christian theology, especially on the relationship between God the Father and Jesus, and on the mystical human relationship with the Divine. In Galatians, St Paul said he received a vision of the resurrected Jesus, who commissioned him to be the Apostle to the gentiles. Paul's call to be the Apostle to the gentiles was shocking because, as he freely admits, he had previously persecuted the church of God. Being struck blind on the road to Damascus has become a metaphor for sudden enlightenment and conversion. However, conversion is not the most accurate term to be applied to him. The word conversion is a word most misunderstood today. Conversion assumes changing from one kind of belief to another. In the case of Paul there was essentially no Christian religion for him to convert to. St Paul Apostle was the chosen Vessel of election to the Gentiles. After his conversion St Paul’s love for Christ was stronger than death. After his conversion St Paul wished to be dissolved and to be with Christ and live for Christ. St Paul had ardent zeal for Christ which knew no bounds. St Paul made himself all to all, to gain all to Christ. After his conversion St Paul called himself a prisoner of Christ. St Paul took pride only in the Cross of Christ and Christ crucified. St Paul endured great suffering for the sake of Christ. St Paul suffered injuries and dangers of various kinds. St Paul taught the centrality of the Church, the Body of Christ. Universality is an essential mark of St Paul's mission.
