Sports massage for pectoralis minor trigger point

This video demonstrates a safe, sustainable technique to address the trigger point in the pectoralis minor that I've been using for over a decade.

The magic in this technique is making sure you address your client's comfort zone: if you sink too deep they will resist you and you will have trouble getting the trigger point deactivated.

The pec minor is a small, triangular tissue located under the pectoralis major. Its origin is usually found in the anterior of the third and fifth ribs, close to the sternum, though this can vary. The outer apex of the tissue forms the insertion point, located at the medial border and upper surface of coracoid process of the scapula.

This tissue's primary function is in the stabilisation of the scapula, but you will often see it forming part of nerve entrapment sites around the peripheral nerves that supply the upper extremities. It can also refer deep into the shoulder and mimic ulnar nerve distribution symptoms. If it tightens, its insertion point can draw the scapula into anterior tilt, so watch the inferior angle of the scapula for winging.

There are two broad steps when applying this technique. Firstly, use your forearm to sink into the tissue until you hit the first point of resistance. You'll need a broad approach here; using your elbow will only create discomfort for the client and they'll fight you.

Secondly, pick up the arm and move it in and out of external rotation.

While you can follow up this technique with dry needling, this has its own set of risks: any time you're needling around the torso you need to be keenly aware of your anatomy. More often than not, you can get great results by skipping the needling and using a handson approach alone.
