Sports massage for shin splints (medial compartment)

Follow
Stuart Hinds Academy

In this video I discuss the treatment of shin splints, focussing on the medial compartment of the leg. I discuss the assess/treat scenario to highlight the affected area. It is so important to be able to reproduce your client's symptoms on either hopping or calf raises.

The tibialis posterior and flexor digitorum and their trigger points should form a key part of your treatment sequence. The tibalis posterior helps control of the foot in the pronation of the foot so needs to be included, as well as flexor digitorum. I spend time discussing how to address your clients comfort in these techniques which is incredibly important in getting the right therapeutic changes.

Addressing the flexor hallucis in the medial compartment you have to be as far inferior as you can, you can work the bulk from the lateral as well but I find the medial portion as usually the most restricted.

I have included a passive release technique to help open the area aswell. Don't forget to address the gastro/soleus hypertonicity as well as a starting point.
