Sports Massage for the Hip external rotatores for football (Soccer) athletes

We continue our sports specific series in this video, this time football ( soccer) athletes endure alot of eccentric and concentric load into their hip external rotator muscles so these muscles should be on your scope when working with these athletes.

In my opinion when working with lower limb athletes/ sports the hip is a crucial area as a starting point for the hands on soft tissue therapist , I urge you to source my High Performance Hip Protocol as a starting point, ( it is one of our masterclasses ) it addresses the common holding patterns and restrictions that develop at the hip in lower limb athletes.

Once you have cleared the hip extension/internal rotation and adduction restrictions we can then address subsidiary muscle groups such as the external rotators. As mentioned in the video can take the time to locate and treat some of the latent trigger points in the ER , you will need to sink through the gluteus maximus to gain access to the deep ER , so its imperative to make sure the muscle is in a relaxed position to access.

As usual the art is working within your clients comfortability , working to deep and aggressively will make your athlete guard against the pressure and you will not get the desired outcome.

Deep External Rotator Muscles:
Piriformis (PI)
Quadratus Femoris (QF)
Obturator Internus/externus ( OI, OE)
Gemellus Superior /Inferior ( GS,GI)
