Sports Massage: Iliotibial band Syndrome (Vastus Lateralis)

It has always surprised me that many therapists don`t place enough value on treating the Vastus lateralis in the treatment of the iliotibial band condition, it is the largest muscle in the lateral thigh on the ITB covers the Vastus lateralis.

So with this is in mind this second video excerpt from our ITB masterclass course, i demonstrate a game changing technique for the on the Vastus Lateralis which is a must muscle in treating this condition.

The ITB condition usually presents in runners and cyclist and the lateral thigh muscles are quite dominant in these actions and will be susceptible to overload but also can blend into the Patellofemoral dysfunction, which is not uncommon to have both dysfunctions co exisiting.

I never massage the ITB itself, as far as im concern you create pain with out any change , so i really focus on the tissue either side of ITB and the hip to offload the hypertonic load on the ITB and measure my change by using a modified Obers test to assess.
My High Performance Hip protocol is were i start and then work the distal structures.
