Sri Lanka is preparing for its first presidential election since mass protests in 2022, which were triggered by the country's worstever economic crisis. The country is voting for a new president, with President Ranil Wickremesinghe being the main contender. Wickremesinghe was appointed by parliament after Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was ousted.

Leftist political candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake is also a strong contender, drawing increasing public support. More candidates are running in Saturday's election than any other in Sri Lanka's history, including opposition leader Sajith Premaasa and 38yearold nephew of the ousted president, Namal Rajapaksa. Results are not expected to be clear until Sunday morning.
