Farewell and arohanui (much love & appreication) Te Waipounamu.


My summer South Island hiking season was marred by disappointment, failure and many changes of plans. After the disaster of my attempted thru hike of Te Araroa's South Island route, I am grateful that I was able to complete the Abel Tasman and Rakiura Tracks before the vicious return of thyroid disease which finally brought my hiking season to an abrupt end. Unfortunately, not before I had travelled all the way to Te Anau to complete a back to back hike of both the Milford and Kepler Tracks, and then returned to attempt a full thru hike of the St James Walkway... eventually having to cancel all much to my despair.


It's a long time since I've been as upset as I was on the way home from Te Anau, barely able to stop the tears from falling and not even wanting to talk to family and friends. I had managed to book onto the Milford and Kepler tracks on a whim during peak season, and it made no sense that I should be forced to cancel at the last minute. But only a few days later, when I had to make the same decision just one day into my St James adventure, I knew that the universe obviuously had other plans for me.
