Stanley Rosewood Knob Restoration

Follow
Gordon Addison

This video walks you through the steps of restoring a Brazilian rosewood knob for a Stanley hand plane.

Are you looking for a quick repair that’s solid and capable of putting your plane back into service? This is not the video for you.

This restoration is a slow and deliberate process with the goal of “restoring” the original beauty and integrity of the knob. First and foremost I will ensure a solid bond that will last for years. Second I will attempt to retain the minor dents and pock marks that give this knob its character. And lastly we will attempt to make the the existing crack (if you dare call it that) completely disappear.

These steps, collectively, classify this as a restoration not just a “repair”. Is grafting rosewood strips into the repair necessary? No…..no it’s not. But it’s detail, care and patience that will take your work to the next level.

Enjoy!
