While some drivers are experiencing an increase of over 60 liters of fuel on their routes, others are enjoying the shorter distance. However, transport costs on the changed routes have increased by 10,000 UGX. Karuma Bridge was constructed in 1963, shortly after Uganda gained independence from Britain. The bridge was built to connect the districts of West Nile, Gulu and Lira. The bridge is now in a state of disrepair, with cracks and water leakages on its base beams, and there are plans to replace it with a new cablestayed bridge.
