I was very lucky to fly Spitfire MJ627 from Biggin Hill hangar in October 2018 on a perfect morning. Piloted by Jeremy and occasionally by me we flew South over the beautiful patchwork quilt of the Sussex Weald countryside and along the stunning Seven Sisters coastal cliffs to Beachy Head, with a few inversions along the way including a victory roll! The Rolls Royce V12 27 litre Merlin engine enveloped the plane and me too. The whole thing was amazing and gave just a small glimpse of what it must have been like for those brave young pilots. Background:

The Spitfire was designed by Reginald Mitchell who never lived to see its role in the war. Spitfire MJ627 was built at Castle Bromwich in 1943 and entered service with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) serving with the RAF. Only two days after entering service, MJ627 destroyed a Messerschmitt Me 109 over Arnhem whilst flown by P/O Sidney Bregman. Beyond its kill, MJ627 has a welldocumented wartime history with numerous ground attack, bomber escort and patrol missions being recorded.
In 1950 the plane was converted to a 2 seater. MJ627 now resides at Biggin Hill Heritage hangar where Spitfires and other WW2 planes are restored and maintained. This costs a lot!
