Strengthening vs. Stretching Exercises | Understanding Muscle Strengthening and Stretching

We getting strong or flexible today?? Why not both??

Understanding strengthening exercises and stretching exercises can be a bit of a confusing concept at first. Both involve muscles moving, but what makes one different from the other?

In this video, I try to make this concept as simple (a bit oversimplified tbh) as I can so that you get some stable footing for understanding exercises from.

Strengthening:
Exercises that are focused on building strength
repetitive contractions
work against resistance (weights, gravity)

Stretching:
Exercises that are focused on improving muscle length/range of motion
held for longer periods of time
focus on relaxation at endrange

The best thing you can do to help you understand this concept is review and understand your anatomy! If you know where a muscle is located in the body and what it does, then applying these concepts of strengthening or stretching is a lot easier!

I use the examples of bicep curls, modified hurdler stretch, standing quads stretch, and triceps kickback to help this concept become that much easier to grasp. I hope that this video makes this confusing concept a bit more clear for you!

Jonah is a Canadian Physiotherapist who works with a primarily outpatient orthopaedic population at a clinic in Sudbury, Ontario. He completed his Master's of Physical Therapy at the University of Toronto, with his Bachelors of Sciences specialized in Human Kinetics coming from The University of Ottawa. He is also considered by his parents, fiancee and dogs to be a pretty cool guy.
