Studio watercolour practise; a backlit landscape

Follow
Jem Bowden Watercolour

A forty minute halfimperial demo painting in real time, after a seven minute explanation of the (fairly loose) plan, and simple drawing out of the composition.
** COMPETITION WIN THIS WATERCOLOUR; please see my November 2022 blog for info **

During the painting I give a live commentary, rather than an overdubbed one.
I explain a little bit about my thinking and purpose in doing this kind of painting. Compared to plein air painting I usually find working indoors a bit purposeless and less inspired. That’s because my painting is inspired by the experience of being in the landscape, rather than a desire to ‘make pictures’, per se. I don’t do ‘sketches’ in either situation, since I tend to regard my actual paintings as sketches as well as the end point.

I hope the video is watchable and useful for aspiring watercolourists, showing one way of working in the studio. That is, finding some references that enthuse you, then introducing some creativity by putting them together and going on a journey with no worry or expectation about the result.
Cheers,
Jem (Materials used are listed below, and mentioned in the video)
