Workplace Suicide Prevention hosts "Suicide Rates by Industry and Occupation, 49 States, 2021" webinar with Dr. Deb Stone and Dr. Cora Peterson of the CDC (recorded 2/20/24). They discuss a recent CDC report that examined 2021 suicide rates in civilian industries and occupations among working aged males and females in 49 states. Results highlight those industry and occupation groups with rates greater than the general population of male and females of working ages. Implications for prevention are provided.

About the Panelists
Dr. Deb Stone is Lead Behavioral Scientist for Suicide Prevention at CDC, currently serving in a temporary capacity coleading development of the 2024 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention. In her typical role, Deb leads CDC’s Suicide Prevention Team focused on carrying out a public health approach to suicide prevention using data, science, action, and collaboration. Prior to CDC, Deb worked in State suicide prevention in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and Directed the National Center for Suicide Prevention Training. Deb has over 20 years of experience in suicide prevention and has authored or coauthored over 65 articles, book chapters, and government reports.

Dr. Cora Peterson is a senior economist at the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. She leads statistical analysis and decision modeling studies to support resource allocation related to injury and violence prevention, including studies on: The comprehensive cost of US injury and violence morbidity and mortality; lifetime cost of sexual violence, intimate partner violence and child maltreatment; health care costs related to substance use disorder; and methods issues, such as how to improve cost estimates of hospitalbased care, equity pitfalls in some policies and data sources, and options to operationalize analytic methods for public health studies.
