Sukhoi Su15 (NATO designation: Flagon) was developed in the 1950s, when the Soviet Union considered the American Stratofortress B52 a threat to deal with. It was born to replace the Soviet Union's main interceptor fighter at that time, the Su11 (NATO designation: FishpotC). The Su11 series is said to be insufficiently capable of intercepting the B52, due to the lack of reliable radar technology and poor performance, forcing the country to find alternative solutions. The Soviet Su15 was said to be capable of intercepting America's most modern combat and reconnaissance aircraft in the past, but was also notorious many times for shooting down passenger planes that violated the country's airspace.
