Why hello you lovely little peppercorns, my name's Noa Lee and Super Mario Bros 2 Japan, better known as The Lost Levels is a great game that tends to get a lot of flak for being too hard and "poorly designed." Is that true though? Or is Super Mario Bros 2 Japan / The Lost Levels the progenitor of a whole new sub genre that would later evolve into what we now call the hardcore platformer? In this Super Mario Bros 2 Japan review / The Lost Levels review I hope to answer that very question and have some fun along the way.

We all know the story of how Super Mario Bros 2 was different outside of Japan than it was within and that the game North American and European audiences got was actually a reskinned version of another game called Yume Kojo Doki Doki Panic, but in this discussion of the game's history Super Mario Bros 2 Japan often gets overlooked and written off as little more than an oddity in the Super Mario franchise. While many of us enjoyed Super Mario Bros The Lost Levels, very few of us have actually played the original Super Mario Bros 2 Japan and I'm hoping that this review will encourage people to give it a shot and appreciate it for what it is.
