How did all this weirdness begin? Here Dylan kicks off the season by revisiting the surf spot that first made him think differently about the waves we choose to ride. Isabela, Puerto Rico is a wild, sidewashed beachbreak that challenges most ideas of how to even take off. The island is rich with conventionally better waves, yet for Dylan and his buddies Aron Geiger, Carlos Cruz, Hector Santamaria and others, Isabela is their playground of choice. “Yes,” says Dylan at one point, “other spots were pumping. But I didn’t care! This is all I’ve ever wanted.” It’s also kind of their little secret. Yet decades of land exploitation in the area has put Isabela and other surf zones under threat, and it’s time to surrender the secret in order to save it. As Dylan says: “I’d rather share my favorite spot with everyone in the world, rather than lose it forever.”
