‘Doing the robot’ on the dancefloor would look more like ‘doing the worm’ if the dance move was inspired by soft robots! Soft robotics is an exciting subcategory of robotics that mimics the mechanics of nature – utilizing soft materials moved by pressure systems. Soft robotics engineer Jim Neilan and mechanical engineering intern Anthony Dempsey explain the benefits of soft robotics in human spaceflight and some of the skills that make for a good soft robotics engineer.

We’re launching STEM Engagement to new heights with learning resources that connect teachers, students, parents and caregivers to the inspiring work at NASA. Join us as we apply science, technology, engineering and mathematics to explore space, improve aeronautics, examine Earth and strive to land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon with the Artemis program.
