Suspicion

David Fell

One of 25 songs Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman wrote for Elvis, it got lost as album filler on his 1962 release "Pot Luck.". Terry Stafford, at the time unaffiliated with a lable, recorded a demo in late 1963. A DJ at LA radio station KFWB liked the demo and brought it to a brandnew record company next door, which released it as it's second single. Have you heard about that week in 1964 where The Beatles occupied ALL FIVE of the Top 5 spots on the Billboard Hot 100? Well, #6 was Terry Stafford's 'Suspicion.' It rose to #3, breaking the Beatles monopoly. And here in Chicago, it got to #1 on influential station WLS.

Performed by the Old Town School of Folk Music’s 60’s Ensemble, under the direction of Sherpa Steve Levitt.

Recorded February 26, 2023, at the school’s venerable 909 W. Armitage location in Chicago.
