Sutherland Timber has been 100 years in the business of milling timber. Initially established in 1920, as a sawmill in Southland, the operation found its way to Kaiapoi in the 1950s to be closer to the Lyttelton port and Christchurch city.

In the mid1980s Murray (Muz) and Anne (Annie) Sutherland took over management of the company, and have set a platform for the company to retain its core family values.

In 2017 Murray Sutherland was humbled to be made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to the timber industry and the community.

Our processing plant includes a drying kiln, treatment plant and planer mill and process around 80 cubic metres of Radiata Pine and Douglas Fir each day. Radiata Pine accounts for about 70% and Douglas Fir about 30%, and roughly 2530% of what we mill is exported. Sutherland Timber are proud to employ over 30 staff.
