The newgeneration Suzuki Swift has launched in Australia, boasting hybrid credentials for the very first time, taking on the likes of the Toyota Yaris, the Mazda 2 and the MG3 in the affordable city runabout stakes.

It now boasts Hybrid in its namesake, with power coming from a 1.2litre threecylinder engine with mildhybrid assistance from a small integrated startergenerator contributing 2.3kW and 60Nm. Total outputs are a modest 61kW and 112Nm.

Larger and roomier than the outgoing generation Swift, this new fourthgen has been given a boost in tech and safety to ensure the compact hatch attempts to move with the times.

Available in four variants and three grades, the range kicks off with the base manual yes, a manual hybrid at $24,490 driveaway and tops out with our test subject, the GLX priced from $29,490 driveaway. Yes, the added tech and safety does now come at an extra cost.

A worthy nemesis to the newly released hybrid MG3? Contributor Dylan Campbell finds out.
