I never really worried too much about shaft seals until I realized I had a PYI dripless shaft seal on Reverie, our 1985 Pearson 34 #sailboat I was cleaning behind the engine and I bumped it and water came in. At first I was concerned, but it sealed right away on its own. So decided to learn more about it. Shaft seals are an important piece of equipment on a #sailboat . It is also a safety element when #sailing .

This video shares what I learned. It also has a presentation by Pablo Soto of General Propeller when he explains the difference between the dripless shaft seals types and styles. I then explained the rational for our selection of a shaft seal for Reverie,.

There are things you need to consider such as the location of your stern tube, the outer diameter of your stern tube, the diameter of your shaft and the distance between your shaft coupler and the edge of the stern tube. As this will help you figure out which shaft seal will work best for you.
