The SAAB 17 was the first allmetal aircraft developed in Sweden. It was also to be the first aircraft built by SAAB, who had only been formed on the 2nd of April 1937. After a small issue around the wings (they liked to break in fast dives), the aircraft entered service in 194142.

Originally concieved as a reconnaissance aircraft, it was also expanded to fill the role of a light bomber. The aircraft came as a landplane or a seaplane, and could even have its landing gear replaced with skis for snowy weather (Because Sweden). Though it didn't really see much action, it still had a distinguished career, both with Sweden and later the Ethiopian Air Force.
