Total Organic Chemistry

The Swern oxidation is a way to oxidize primary and secondary alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes and ketones using mild conditions. Using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and oxalyl chloride, an "activated DMSO" complex can be formed to oxidize the alcohol to the carbonyl compound. In this video, we discuss the mechanism of the Swern oxidation, its advantages and disadvantages, and an example of how it has been used in the chemical literature.
