On Monday, June 24th, Southwestern Railways refurbished Class 458/5, which entered service after being in storage for months. Announced in 2021, these units were intended for services on the Portsmouth Direct Line, with them being upgraded with higher gearing to allow for 100 MPH (160 KPH) running. The changes made include removing one trailer coach, installation of new seats and carpets, new tables installed with wireless charging pads in first class, and plugs and USB ports being fitted at every seat. Currently, these units are being deployed on services between London Waterloo to Weybridge (via Hounslow) and London Waterloo to Twickenham (via Hounslow). This is due to the delayed introduction of Class 701 “Arterio” units, with the 458/4s being used as a stop gap to increase capacity during peak hours. I filmed these units on the first day of service (June 24th) and yesterday (June 26th). Currently, only three are in service: 458415, 458421, and 458422.
