Oceanographer Sylvia A. Earle has become a hero of mine. She was the first woman to walk the ocean floor and broke barriers in 1970 when she led the first allfemale underwater research team to study ocean life off the coast of St. John. She also holds the record for the deepest dive (1,250 feet) without a tether! Sylvia has gone on to found Mission Blue, an organization that aims to explore and protect the ocean as well as raise awareness about marine life.
