People are generally familiar with Norse culture in a sort of Hollywood Comic Book fashion. But of course, the REAL Scandinavian heritage has a historical depth, and the REAL myths, legends, and sagas are grand in scope and filled with epic adventures.

The Norse were great gameplayers, and when the Vikings went exploring, seeking trade and establishing colonies, they brought their tabletop games with them to new lands and peoples. Most of these were called “tafl” games the word “tafl” literally meaning “table.”

Tablut is probably the most popular of these games. It's an asymmetrical strategy game in which one player is controlling a king and his guards, and the other player commands a larger force of attacking soldiers.

The objective for the king is to escape from the board, or to a corner space of the board. The objective of the attackers is to capture the king before he can get away. A great challenge!
