Besides a proper grip, another essential element of tactical training and shooting is trigger control. This, along with the grip, is the foundation of being able to shoot a pistol accurately.

A poor trigger press, and poor trigger control, will keep you from achieving consistent accuracy and from reaching your potential as a shooter. A bad trigger press will ensure the pistol is disturbed as the shot breaks, which pushes your shot off target.

If you don't have those pieces of the puzzle, along with a proper firing grip, all the guns and gear and tactical wizardry won't make a difference. Pistol shooting is like anything else; if the foundations aren't there, you're building on quicksand.

Good trigger control starts with making good contact with the trigger face. You shouldn't put too much nor too little finger on the trigger. You need good contact with the trigger face, so the trigger can be pressed to the rear without disturbing the sight picture.

Additionally, the pistol needs to be operated with a solid shooting grip, as high up on the gun as possible. The solid grip, along with a correct trigger press, keeps the pistol on target and ensures the shot will land where you want it to.

Proper trigger control and grip are the most important aspect of operating a handgun. The sights literally matter less than grip and trigger control. If your tactical training doesn't include a solid foundation in the fundamentals of using your weapon correctly, then you're going to be in a world of hurt if you ever have to use your gun in defense of yourself or others.
