Just along from Westerfield Level Crossing in Suffolk there's a foot crossing along a popular country trail. From what I have heard, Network Rail wanted to close this crossing to the public, but it would have been a very unpopular move. So, they installed some talking crossing warning units. They are battery powered with a solar panel to charge and have a PIR to detect people approaching. They cycle through nine different messages when they are approached. Only one side was working. This is a busy line with several freight and passenger trains passing in the hour I was here.
