Terminations and downsizings aren’t easy … for anybody. However, there’s often one step that’s overlooked in our attempt to get back to “business as usual.” And that is telling the rest of your team.
Cut down on gossip and speculation with these steps:
1. Acknowledge what’s happened. Do this as soon as possible.
2. Handle these conversations facetoface with the whole team at once. Call a meeting and remember to include remote team members.
3. Keep the message professional (and legal) by only sharing appropriate details and no smack talk.
4. Allow discussion and answer questions without rushing.
Being upfront when someone is let go minimizes gossip, redirects focus, and restores confidence.
