Dr. David Geier

Tennis elbow is probably the most common cause of elbow pain in adults. You don’t have to be a tennis player to get it, though. In this video, I discuss what tennis elbow is, how a doctor tells if you have it, and how you can get over it.

Please note: I don't respond to questions and requests for specific medical advice left in the comments to my videos. I receive too many to keep up (several hundred per week), and legally I can't offer specific medical advice to people who aren't my patients (see below). If you want to ask a question about a specific injury you have, leave it in the comments below, and I might answer it in an upcoming Ask Dr. Geier video. Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a common cause of elbow pain on the outside of your elbow and forearm. Usually it develops over time rather than after a traumatic event. Typically, you notice pain just below the bony prominence on the outside of your elbow. You might notice pain with extending your wrist or turning your forearm so that your palm is facing up.

A majority of patients do not need surgery for tennis elbow. Often rest, ice and a short period where you avoid painful activities is enough to help you get over the pain. Sometimes wearing a counterforce strap just below your elbow when you do physical activities can help. Physical therapy can be very helpful too. Even injections, like a cortisone shot or PRP, has a role for some patients. Occasionally you might need surgery.

In this video, I discuss the diagnosis and treatment options for lateral epicondylitis. If you have elbow pain, watch it and decide if you should see a doctor for tennis elbow.
