Tesla Bidirectional Charging Changes Everything

https://robfreeman.com/teslabidirect... The new Inflation Reduction Act is awash in financial incentives for solar, energy storage and other clean energy technologies.

Included in the Act, is the revival of the “Alternative Fuel Refueling Property Credit” which allows individuals to take a 30% tax credit on EV chargers through 2032…

Of note is that the new tax credit includes bidirectional charger technology helps vehicle owners save money in multiple ways and adds resiliency to the grid and more reliable electricity to your home.

An EV that includes bidirectional charging technology and that is connected to a bidirectional charger in your home is able to not only charge its battery from the grid, or from your home solar system, but also deliver that stored electricity back to your home or even sell it back to the grid as needed.

In contrast to home energy backup systems, such as a Tesla Powerwall, EV batteries are much larger and much less expensive to install and use than a home energy storage system.

The cost per kWh for an EV with bidirectional charging may be as much as 20X less expensive than a home installed energy storage system, such as a Tesla Powerwall. For example, a Tesla Powerwall may have a capacity of 1012 kWh whereas a Tesla itself may have a 100 kWh battery.

As such, I would expect Tesla to cannibalize its own home energy storage business in the future by introducing bidirectional charging for Tesla vehicles in the next 1224 months.

Bidirectional charging also enables vehicle owners to participate in demand response programs where they're available. Utilities are incentivized to roll out these programs because it solves a grid reliability problem while not requiring them to make capital investments in addition capacity reserves.

For solar installers, offering bidirectional charging installation means new opportunities to expand your business and upsell a solar PV buyer to a bidirectional charger... However, adding bidirectional charger installation creates new risks to your business if you don't have the right insurance and/or if your contractual agreements are not properly buttoned up.

For instance, a vertically integrated solar installer who has licensed electricians on staff will have different risks than one that is a pure sales organization or one that installs solar but then outsources the bidirectional charging installation.
