2024 Clash of Steel

Subjection/Obliging

2024 Clash of Steel HEMA Carnival successfully concluded

I originally wanted to edit this video last week. The excitement from the competition lingers in our minds, but the fatigue after the event left us exhausted.

On the first day of the event, I introduced Gérard Thibault's Subjection/Obliging techniques. During the pool rounds on the second day, I was a bit too eager to use Subjection, which backfired. Although I won all my preliminary matches, they weren't as ideal as I hoped. Later, I adjusted my mindset for the elimination rounds, using appropriate techniques at the right distance and timing. The result is what you see in the video—various flashy turns and spins.

For me, all the turns during the matches weren't deliberate; that made it harder for the opponent to counterattack and also protecting my sword from the impact of thrusts. Additionally, turning helps reduce the strain on my knees from my body weight.

Winning the matches is great, but winning them stylishly is even better. Fencing like Dancing—the arena is my ballroom. No need for preset moves, just completing one sword dance after another as I please.
