Adah Almutairi is the director of UCSD's Center of Excellence in Nanomedicine, a rapidly expanding interdisciplinary research collaborative team developing tools for the future of biology and medicine. Her own research group, the Laboratory for Bioresponsive Materials, creates novel smart materials for ondemand drug delivery, regeneration of damaged tissue, and safe imagebased diagnosis. Many of these projects involve the lab's novel polymers that respond to biological (e.g. reactive oxygen species, increased in inflammation) or usercontrolled (e.g. light) stimuli by degrading into mall molecules; designing materials with sufficient sensitivity to these signals requires creative chemistry and cuttingedge analytical methods.
