In the early 1980s, Atari was riding high and the undisputed champion of the home console market. Their system, the Atari 2600 (or Video Computer System), had sold more than twenty million copies.
With market dominance and programming power at their disposal, Atari created their port for PacMan, the massive arcade hit.
It was a disaster. While the game sold well, it failed to meet commercial expectations, resulting in a reputation hit that would – when combined with other poor decisions – take down Atari and contribute to the video game crash of 1983.
Here’s the story of PacMan for the Atari 2600.
