The better Ford Ranger? 2023 Volkswagen Amarok review: Petrol four joins diesel V6 in new ute/pickup

The 2023 Volkswagen Amarok is finally here, but just don't call it a Ford Ranger in a suit. That's right, the bestselling midsize pickup in Australia has a new twin, having been related to the Mazda BT50 in their respective previous generations. Since then, the BT50 paired up with the new Isuzu DMax, while the Ranger has moved on with the Amarok, which went it alone it its first generation.

Confused? Don't be. The secondgeneration Amarok is looking to capitalise on the new Ranger's success by taking its overall package to the next level. And yes, the two utes actually do look different inside and out but there's a lot more differentiation between the two than just their designs.

As CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Byron Mathioudakis finds out in this expert review, the Amarok also drives differently, partly thanks to its option of a Ford Mustangderived 2.3litre turbopetrol fourcylinder engine, with such a powertrain an unknown quantity in Australia in 2023. And let's not forget the shared 3.0litre turbodiesel V6. It's a headlinegrabber for a reason.
