The British Airways Family Tree: Part 3 British Midland International

Histories of Airliners

British Midland International (BMI) traces its roots back to 1938 as Air Schools Limited, initially training RAF pilots. The airline evolved, expanding into cargo and charter flights before fully embracing scheduled operations in the 1950s. Under the leadership of Michael Bishop, BMI carved a niche for itself in the competitive British aviation market, challenging established carriers like British Airways. Through strategic partnerships and a focus on customer service, the airline grew into a significant player, operating both domestic and international routes. However, despite its successes, the economic climate and industry pressures ultimately led to its merger with British Airways in 2012, marking the end of an era for the onceindependent carrier.
