Imam Syafi'i was a great mufti of the Islamic community who was also the founder of the Syafi'i school. He is still a relative of the Prophet, from the Bani Muttalib or descendants of AlMuthalib, the brother of Hasyim who was the grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Before becoming a great jurist, Imam Syafi'i went to Medina to study with Imam Malik, the founder of the Maliki School. Imam Syafi'i developed his school of thought in the early 9th century, which became popular in several countries in the world, including Indonesia.

Imam Syafi'i's full name is Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Idris ashSyafi'i alMuththalibi alQurasyi. He was born in 150 AH or 767 AD. There are differences of opinion among historians regarding the place of birth of Imam Syafi'i. Some say it is in Gaza, there are also those who think it is in Asqalan, near Gaza. When he was two years old, Imam Syafi'i was taken to his ancestral land in Mecca by his mother, after his father died.

Since childhood, Imam Syafi'i was skilled in Arabic literature, where he was able to memorize various Arabic poems. Thanks to the guidance of his mother, Fatimah, he was able to read and memorize the Koran. After that, he studied with Sufian bin Uyainah, one of the hadith experts in Mecca. Imam Syafi'i also studied with Muslim bin Khalid AlZanji, who was an expert in jurisprudence in Mecca. In 780, when he was 13 years old, he went to Medina to study with Imam Malik, who was an expert in jurisprudence and hadith and the founder of the Maliki School.
