On February 28, 1861, the Provisional Confederate Congress established a provisional volunteer army and gave control of military operations and the authority to muster state forces and volunteers to the newly elected Confederate president, Jefferson Davis. This was the beginning of the Confederate States Army of America in which between 750,000 and 1,000,000 men fought in defense of the Confederacy in the Civil War of the United States of America.
