The doctoral degree conferment ceremony is an old tradition at Uppsala University. The first conferment took place in 1600. The day begins with a cannon salute from the Castle at the northern tower at 7:00 and 8:00 and ringing of the Cathedral bell called “Storan”, which at seven metric tons is the largest bell in Sweden. The bell ringing at major academic ceremonies in Uppsala is an ancient tradition recalling the old and close relations between the Church and the University. The cannon salutes at doctoral degree conferments have existed since the beginning of the 19th century.

During the formal conferment ceremony in the University Main Building auditorium, the new PhDs will receive honorary decorations: a hat or laurel wreath and diploma. As PhDs they are also eligible to use the third decoration: the ring. Those who became PhDs 50 years ago attend the spring conferment as jubilee PhDs.

The conferment ceremony begins with an entry procession at 12:15. During the procession and the conferment ceremony, the Royal Academic Orchestra performs under the direction of Professor Stefan Karpe, Director Musices.

Everyone is invited to the ceremony in the auditorium. A ticket is required for admission. Free tickets may be picked up at the University Main Building stair lobby by the caretaker’s office from 10:00 on Thursday, 23 May, until the ceremony starts. The audience is to take a seat in the auditorium by 12:00.

In the evening there will be dinner and dancing in the Hall of State at Uppsala Castle for invited guests. Close to 700 people usually participate in the conferment dinner: the new PhDs and jubilee PhDs with their invited guests, invited honorary guests, teachers and other employees.
