The Conquest of the Pole ( À la conquête du Pole ) is a 1912 film made by    • Georges Méliès
It was Méliès's last major film and the longest he made: 650 meters of film corresponding to 44 minutes of projection time. Méliès, who was already in precarious financial straits, had to enlist the help of Pathé to produce and distribute this colossal, which included, in addition to complex sets and myriad tricks, the enormous puppet of the Snow Giant (24:17), to move which required at least 12 men.
The story follows the same plot already used by Méliès in previous Fantastic Voyages: a group of wacky explorers set out to conquer the North Pole aboard
of the incredible aerobus designed by Professor Maboul (Georges Méliès). The adventure, which after a thousand perils, ends gloriously for the protagonists is told to us in 34 pictures:

French historian Georges Sadoul describes À la conquête du Pole as Méliès's masterpiece, but a masterpiece completed too late, as if Giotto had finished his best work in the time of Michelangelo or Raphael. Certainly this film can be regarded as the summa of the art of the Magician of Montreuil, the film in which Méliès presents, in the most sophisticated and perfect manner, all his varied arsenal of tricks and artifices.
The Conquest of the Pole was released in France on May 3, 1912 to the almost total indifference of the public: trick films and fantastic journeys no longer interested him. Ten years separate this film from    • Viaggio sulla Luna (1902) Georges Méliès   , little or nothing seems to have changed in Méliès's cinema other than the means employed or his technical mastery, but if we compared this film with the contemporary Quo Vadis? , we would immediately get an idea of how far the history of cinema had come by leaving Méliès behind.
