This is one of the parts of the eye that is responsible for allowing light to pass from the outside to the inside of the eye, and does so while protecting the iris and lens.

The cornea is a completely transparent ocular tissue that has a great refractive capacity and that must have the adequate curvature to function properly. It is considered, therefore, the first lens that is part of the vision system. Next to the lens is the part of the eye that will help you focus what you have in front of you.

Structure of the cornea
This tissue is composed of 6 different cell layers (always talking about the human eye, of course) which are:

Corneal epithelium: It is the outermost layer of the cornea and serves as protection against external traumas, fluids and microorganisms, in addition to stabilizing the production of tears. As for the vision, it has a great refractive power.
Bowman Membrane: It gives stability to the cornea helping it to maintain its shape.
Corneal Stroma: It is the strongest part of the cornea and constitutes 90% of its thickness.
Capa de Dua: The last layer discovered in 2013.
Descemet membrane: It is a membrane that connects the stroma with the deeper cell layer of the cornea and can regenerate easily after a trauma.
Endothelium: It is a layer of cells with a high metabolic activity and are responsible for maintaining the transparency of the cornea. To achieve this transparency, the endothelium must maintain a fluid balance. Otherwise, the corneal stroma will swell due to excess and transparency will be lost.
