The Bible of James

Joshua was the leader of Israel after Moses. He had previously served as an assistant to Moses, explored the Promised Land with the 12 spies, and led the Jews during a military battle in the desert.Audience: Joshua is written for the Jewish people who first entered the Promised Land.

These people witnessed the initial fulfillment of the promises God had made to them about obtaining their own land and giving a nation to Abraham's descendants (Genesis 12:1–3).
This book presents us what happened to Israel after the death of Moses. In particular, Joshua deals with the preparations before crossing the Jordan River, the conquest of the land, and the way the land was divided among the tribes of Israel.Date: Probably written between 1400 and 1370 BC.Summary: This book consists of 24 chapters that can be divided into four main sections.

First, chapters 1—5 describe the events surrounding the time the nation of Israel entered the Promised Land. God commissioned Joshua to lead the people of Israel (Joshua 1). Rahab hides the spies who were sent to see the land (Joshua 2). God consecrated his people and then the Jordan River miraculously opened before them (Joshua 3). Because of this, a column of twelve stones was erected to remember that moment (Joshua 4). The new generation of Israelites underwent circumcision (Joshua 5:1–9), the first Passover is celebrated in the Promised Land (Joshua 5:10–12), and the angel of the Lord appears to Joshua to give him further instructions. (Joshua 5:13–15).The second main section deals with the main battles that were fought when Israel conquered that land. Three campaigns were carried out: a much more intense battle that occurred at Jericho (Joshua 6:1—8:35), a campaign in the south (Joshua 9—10), and a campaign in the north (Joshua 11). The rest of chapters 11 and 12 offer us a summary of the military actions that took place during this time. The third main section goes from 13 to 22. This passage presents us with instructions that relate to the way the land began to be distributed among the Israelites.

This passage talks about the land that was yet to be conquered, the land that had already been conquered that was located east of the Jordan River (Joshua 13), the allocation of the lands that were located west of the Jordan River (Joshua 14— 19), the establishment of the cities of refuge (Joshua 20), the towns of the Levites (Joshua 21), and the recording of the eastern tribes who returned to their land (Joshua 22).The fourth section of this book includes two speeches by Joshua (Joshua 2324). During these speeches, Joshua tries to encourage the people of Israel to remain faithful to the Lord, and Joshua also bids them farewell. The book ends with the death of Joshua, who died at the age of 110, the burial of Joseph's bones, and the death of Eleazar, Aaron's son.
